Scuola di Montemaggiore

March 16th, 2015

Montemaggiore School

When I lived in San Giorgio di Pesaro Roberta and I used to meet once a week for English conversation. Now that I live in London we continue to meet via Skype.
Roberta is an English teacher and now works in a secondary school in Montemaggiore. Her English students are preparing a “web newspaper” and asked me if I would like to be interviewed. So this morning via skype I spoke with the students. They had prepared a list of questions and each student took turns to ask me a question. They discovered, where I live (Kingston), when I went to Italy for the first time (my 40th birthday), what I like about Italy (the people, the food etc.), if it was important to learn another language (very important) and if English people are dog lovers (yes). For me it was a really interesting experience and I hope that it was enjoyable and useful for them. In April I hope to go on holiday to Italy and to have the opportunity to visit the school and to meet them.

Emily Carr

March 14th, 2015

On Thursday I went to an art gallery in Dulwich. It was the last week of an show on Emily Carr who is an important Canadian artist. She was born in 1871 and died in 1945. The show was a retrospective of her life. Emily Carr is important because she painted, not only the Canadian landscape in the last part of the 19th and first part of the 20th century, but also the cultural life of the North American Indians which was changing rapidly in this period. I thought Emily Carr was self-taught but in fact she had attended art school and during her life had visited Paris etc. and knew some important artists. In her last paintings one can see the influence of the impressionists but for me her best works were at the beginning of her career. In this period she often painted trees and in her diary she wrote a lot about nature, its continuous movement and that she wanted to capture this sensation, this life force.  For me in the early works she has been more successful.

Allodele (Skylarks)

March 14th, 2015

Allodole avviso

In Italy you say “one swallow doesn’t make a spring”. In England, perhaps because the weather is not so good and some birds arrive later, you say “one swallow doesn’t make a summer”. But even in Spring some birds arrive. Among the birds which arrive in March is the skylark. However, in the last 40 years the population of skylarks in England has fallen by 61%. Like Goldilocks skylarks are a bit particular in the sense that they nest where the grass is neither too tall nor too short. The make their nests on the ground and with the changes in the landscape suitable habitats continue to disappear. Therefore we must do something, even if it is only a small step, to protect their environment.

Today in the park I saw a notice about the skylark. In a part of the park there is an area of grassland that is ideal for the skylarks and every year, from March to August, they nest here. Now to protect their nests and eggs from dogs you have to keep your dogs on the lead and only follow the footpaths.

Uomo e Superuomo (Man and Superman)

March 8th, 2015

On Thursday we went to the National Theatre where there was a production of “Man and Superman”, a play by George Bernard Shaw. The star of this production was Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter films) and therefore all the tickets were sold out. A friend had bought the tickets but at the last moment, because of illness, she couldn’t go and she gave us the tickets.

In this play Ralph Fiennes takes the role of Jack Tanner, a rich intellectual who is in love with Anna. However, Jack is a philosopher who wants to change the world and also believes that women, through marriage, want to entrap men. Is it possible to be a revolutionary and a husband.

This play is not often staged. First because it is very long. This production for example was three hours long  and it was a shortened version.  Secondly, the play is complex because in reality there are two plays in one. On one hand there is a traditional comedy of manners  and on the other hand a play of ideas with many philosophical discussions. For me it was, at times very funny and at times, particularly during the discussions, a bit boring. However, even if you didn’t enjoy the play one must praise Ralph Fiennes performance which was a tour de force.

The seats in the theatre were very uncomfortable. The friend who had bought the tickets advised us to take a cushion.  We thought she was exaggerating. But it was true. The seats were hard and after 30 minutes, much less 3 hours, one needed to move in order to get more comfortable.

Tre Amiche Italiane a Londra (Parte 2)

March 6th, 2015

Tre Amiche Italiane a Londra (Parte 1)

March 6th, 2015

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge

At the weekend my Italian friends, Alba, Oriella and Silvana came to London for a flying visit. They arrived Friday evening and left Sunday morning. On other visits they had seen the most important places and they time they wanted to visit some less touristy places. So they had booked an apartment near Liverpool Street Stazion and on Saturday morning they visited Spitalfields Market, then Borough Market and in the afternoon RopeWalk. I know Spitalfields Market and Borough Market but I had never heard of RopeWalk. In fact it is a street near Maltby Street Market in the south-east of London, not too far from Tower Bridge. This lively market is a combination of market stalls, bars and shops under the railway arches. It is open Saturday and Sunday. My friends spent all day at the markets but they also did one other interesting thing. To get to Borough Market from Spitalfields Market you have to cross the Thames. They used Tower Bridge and it is now possible to cross using a glass walkway which is 42 metre above the river. When we met for dinner later they said that it had been an incredible day.

Gruppo di Lettura (Reading Group.)

March 3rd, 2015

Mrs Hemingway

When we lived in Italy we used to meet two Italian friends every Friday. At the beginning we met only for English conversation but after three months we decided to be more systematic and to read a book. During the week they read a chapter of the book and then on Friday we would talk about new vocabulary, new idiomatic phrases and the development of the story. We began with a book by Agatha Christie, followed by short stories by Alice Walker. Now that I am in London we continue to speak via Skype. Now we are reading the book “Mrs Hemingway by Naomi Wood”. The book is four parts and each part tells the story of one of Hemingway’s wives. Each story is interconnected because the wives knew each other and had many friends in common. We know that Ernest Hemingway had an interesting and exciting life and that the wives lived in his shadow. In this book the wives are centre stage and through the wives we learn a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of Hemingway.

I Cavalli nel parco. (Horses in the Park).

February 28th, 2015

Horse in Home Park

Cavalli in Home Park

Normally we go for a walk with Tristan in Home Park. In the park there is an enclosure and inside are two dray horses – Aragon and Jim. During the Summer the tourists in Hampton Court can tour the gardens in a carriage pulled by the two horses.

When we pass the enclosure Tristan always stops to look at the horses. However, a month ago the gate of the enclosure was open and Tristan ran inside. He began to bark at the horses and to run around them. We were frightened because the horses are very strong and with only one kick they could kill Tristan. Fortunately, the horses are very docile and ignored Tristan. It was difficult to catch Tristan as he runs very fast and we did not want to get too close to the horses in case they gave us a kick. Due stablehands had seen our difficulty and came to help us. After Tristan was on his lead we thanked the stablehands for their help and we discovered that one of  them was Italian. He was born in Naples, had lived for many years in Florence but had recently decided to move to England as his son and family now live in Kingston.

Un café che accetta i cani. (A dog friendly cafe).

February 25th, 2015

Pistaccio Cafe

I used to believe that the English loved their animals more than the Italians. Now that we have a dog I am not so sure. There are many cafes in Kingston but until recently we had never found one that allowed dogs in. Then we discovered the Pistaccio Cafe which is close to the Park where we go with Tristan. The manager, Mario, says that the cafe is both “dog friendly” and “child friendly”. Now we go there two or three times a week. Usually we have a cappuccino and a brioche and Mario offers the dog a piece of bacon or sausage. An added bonus is that the coffee is good.

Bibendum

February 23rd, 2015

Last week Thomas and Erika Orthmann came to London. They stayed with friends, Kevin and Iya, in north London but we met each other during their stay. On Sunday evening we ate at Bibendum, a French restaurant in the centre of London. The restaurant is in the “Michelin Building” which was built in 1909 for the Michelin Company which is famous all over the world for tyres. The name of the restaurant is Bibendum which is the original name of the “Michelin Man”. Today the restaurant is full of reminders of the Michelin Man, particularly the stained glass windows.
