Holiday in Ireland

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

In Ireland for a week where we are visiting Dave and Lynne who live about 20mins from Galway.

So far we have had three days of beautiful weather. We have been driving round taking in the beautiful landscape. Food has also been high on the menu. Last night went to a restaurant and we were having a wonderful meal when Dave decided to get something stuck in the throat. We three sat there looking helpless but fortunately there was a “doctor in the restaurant” and with a “heimlick manoeuvre” the offending item was cleared and Dave is fortunately still with us.

Second coat is on.

Day out to Ravenna

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Friday we decided to take a day off from painting and headed to Ravenna. About 90 minutes drive from here it is well worth the visit even if the weather was wet. Apart from the fantastic mosaics it is also a pleasant town to wander through with lots of cafes and good shops:

House with the first coat Today we finished the first coat and are pleased with the result. During the day the neighbours came to watch and comment and so far all of them like the colour.

House painting begins

Painting the house Today started painting the front of the house. Not sure if we like the colour but the neighbours seemed happy with it.

End of Summer

Rain marks end of Summer

Today, Sunday, we have had a real downpour. Marks end of Summer or that we have decided to start painting the house. Good news for our garden. Most of our cuttings have survived and so next year can plant out more lavender, teucrium, caryopteris etc.

Alitalia

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Alitalia has been filling the newspapers in Italy. Corriere della Sera published an article illustrating some examples of poor managemet.

In 1985 Alitalia stopped landing at Mexico City. However, from 1985-1999 Alitalia continued to have an office in Mexico City which employed 15 people.

In 2002 Alitalia started a daily air service from Fiumicino, Rome to Villanova d’Albenga (Liguria), which happened to be the electoral seat of the then Minister of Home Affairs. The maximum number of passengers ever to use the service was 18. When the minister left his post the air link was also cut.

Painting the house – green.

Front of house - before Preparations to paint the house are almost finished. Hopefully we will start on Monday when “grubby white” will be changed into “light green”.

Summer and sea continues

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Another beautiful day. The humidity of the weekend has gone and it is a pleasant 28degrees. The afternoon, therefore, was spent on the less than crowded beach. Only 6 people from San Giorgio on the beach today with a few Czechs, Dutch scattered around.

Zapping trees of paradise

Monday, September 8th, 2008

The tree Ailanthus Altissima is called the tree of paradise here in the Marche. It is a pest as it seeds and suckers everywhere. I have now obtained “Roundup 450” which should kill it. This herbide is 4 times stronger than Tumbleweed. Problem is that it is sold in litre bottles and is aimed at a farmer’s market i.e. suitable for spraying on hectares (10,000 sq metres). From my calculations 10ml is sufficient for my garden.
