A lovely party

pam wood

A very hot sticky night here in San Giorgio and hard to believe that just a week ago  we were having to wear jackets sitting outside. We had gone to celebrate Pam’s 60th birthday. (The photo of Pam and Michael has appeared before but as I forgot to take my camera to the party I decided to reuse the photo)

Sitting out under the trees in their garden we were wined and dined in style with the full moon adding something to the occasion. As the evening progressed the climate became chilly and shawls, wraps and jackets were put on and with the arrival of the cake refuge was taken indoors.

Despite the low temperatures the people at the party were warm, friendly and interesting with a wide range of ages and backgrounds.  At the table I was fortunate to be sitting between Pam’s daughter Katherine on leave from Hong Kong where she manages the office for “Get Reading Right” a system of teaching reading using synthetic phonics and Pam’s sister in law Catherine who is an artist and when I mentioned stopping at Mulhouse when driving back to England asked if I had seen the “Ricola Building as it’s a “must see” of modern architecture by Herzog & de Meuron. I had to confess my ignorance of modern architecture. Below is the building I’ll be looking out for next time we drive to London:

Roundabout

roundabout

After months of trialling the layout of a roundabout in San Giorigo the final product is in place.  San Giorgio’s roundabout is in the very fashionable colours “terracotta and yellow”. It is very simple and seems to function. It even copes with the large tractors and combine harvesters on the roads during the current harvest period. However, in the middle of the roundabout there is a plastic tube which currently appears to have no function. One assumes it will be for a light and hopefully not for a fountain.

Meeting Carlo – or finding a bar with Sky.

CARLO

The day England played Slovakia (or was it Slovenia) we decided to have a football party at home. We spent a lovely morning on the beach and then  myself, Bill, Jane (Bill’s sister) and Mick (Bill’s brother-in-law) left the beach at 3.00 to get home in time for the match at 4.00. We had invited John and Pam Roscoe and their friends Stewart and Norma to watch the game. Unknown to us Rai (the national television channel) were not showing the afternoon games and so, not having Sky, we had to organise a plan B. We decided to drive to Mondavio and watch the match in a bar. We then discovered that no bars in Mondavio have Sky. They all have Mediaset Premium (owned by Mr Berlusconi) and the match was only on sky.  They suggested the main bar in Orciano. So we drove there only to be disappointed but we were told of another bar out of town that might have it. By chance we had parked the car in front of the “shop that sells Superenalotto tickets” and as we reached the car our neighbour Carlo came out telling us that England was leading 1.0. We told him we were looking for a bar with sky and he said it was available in the “back room” of this shop. It was news to me that the place is in fact a Bookies and there at the back of the shop next to the toilets was Sky tv. Not the most salubrious of places, the screen was small and high up in the corner but at least we saw the game.

The England-Germany game on Sunday was also in the afternoon and so again was not on Rai. In the morning we left Jane and Mick at the beach and returned to spend a quiet day at home and deciding not to bother looking for another bar with Sky. At 5.00 we returned to the beach to pick up Jane and Mick. Before going onto the beach we stopped at the beach bar bar for a coffee. Having just finished our coffee we saw Carlo approach but before we could offer him a coffee he turned into the bar’s office/first aid area. We started to walk towards the beach and passed Carlo just as he came out of the office. 2-1 for Germany he said. “How do you know?”, we asked. “Its here on the TV”, he replied. There in the “office” was sky TV showing the England match.

roscoes at home

Pam and John Roscoe have finally made it to San Giorgio. After 4 years of waiting and wondering they finally arrived on the 2nd June to take the key to their new apartment. Unfortunately minor things such as gas, electricity and running water were not in place and so the initial 2 day stay with us became almost 2 weeks as they battled with the project manager and builders to get things into place. Wanting to add to the pressure  Pam and John had also invited 2 friends (Norma and Stewart) to come stay in the new apartment. They arrived 2 days after Pam and John moved into their almost finished apartment. Fortunately Stewart is very practical and John and Pam put his skills to good use in adding the final touches to the place. However, even then not everything went to plan as in putting up a toilet roll holder John and Stewart made the fatal mistake of only measuring once. They measured, drilled and put a hole in the cistern of the guest bathroom.

Despite all the set backs they are, as you can see, still smiling. They also have, as you can see, a great view from their terrace which drops steeply away. This explains the slightly terrorised look as Pam was teetering on the edge when the photo was taken.
