Allodele (Skylarks)

Allodole avviso

In Italy you say “one swallow doesn’t make a spring”. In England, perhaps because the weather is not so good and some birds arrive later, you say “one swallow doesn’t make a summer”. But even in Spring some birds arrive. Among the birds which arrive in March is the skylark. However, in the last 40 years the population of skylarks in England has fallen by 61%. Like Goldilocks skylarks are a bit particular in the sense that they nest where the grass is neither too tall nor too short. The make their nests on the ground and with the changes in the landscape suitable habitats continue to disappear. Therefore we must do something, even if it is only a small step, to protect their environment.

Today in the park I saw a notice about the skylark. In a part of the park there is an area of grassland that is ideal for the skylarks and every year, from March to August, they nest here. Now to protect their nests and eggs from dogs you have to keep your dogs on the lead and only follow the footpaths.
