Quando abitavamo in Italia incontravamo il venerdì due amiche italiane. All’inizio ci incontravamo solo per conversare in inglese ma dopo tre mesi abbiamo deciso di essere più sistematici e leggere un libro. Durante la settimana leggevamo un capitolo del libro e poi venerdì parlavamo del vocabolario nuovo, frasi idiomatiche nuove e lo sviluppo della storia. Abbiamo cominciato con un libro di Agatha Christie, seguito dai racconti brevi di Alice Walker. Ora che sono a Londra continuiamo a parlare via Skype. Adesso leggiamo il libro “Mrs Hemingway di Naomi Wood”. Il libro è in quattro parti e ogni parte racconta la storia di una moglie di Hemingway. Ogni racconto è interconnesso perché le mogli si conoscevano e avevano molti amici in comune. Sappiamo che Ernest Hemingway aveva una vita interessante ed eccitante e che le mogli vivevano nella sua ombra. In questo libro le mogli sono il centro della scena e attraverso loro impariamo molto sulle forze e le debolezze di Hemingway.
Mrs Hemingway
When we lived in Italy we used to meet two Italian friends every Friday. At the beginning we met only for English conversation but after three months we decided to be more systematic and to read a book. During the week they read a chapter of the book and then on Friday we would talk about new vocabulary, new idiomatic phrases and the development of the story. We began with a book by Agatha Christie, followed by short stories by Alice Walker. Now that I am in London we continue to speak via Skype. Now we are reading the book “Mrs Hemingway by Naomi Wood”. The book is four parts and each part tells the story of one of Hemingway’s wives. Each story is interconnected because the wives knew each other and had many friends in common. We know that Ernest Hemingway had an interesting and exciting life and that the wives lived in his shadow. In this book the wives are centre stage and through the wives we learn a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of Hemingway.
